Short answer: Dental insurance pays part of your bills in exchange for a monthly premium, which averages $49.60 in 2026. Most plans pay 100% of preventive care, 80% of basic work and 50% of major work. Many cap what they pay each year, often between $1,500 and $2,500. These guides explain what plans really cover.

Dental savings plans are not insurance. A plan gives you discounts only at participating dentists. It does not pay the dentist for you, and you pay for all services at the discounted rate. Prices, discounts and dentists vary by plan and ZIP code.

Three terms to know

  • Yearly maximum: the most a plan pays in a year. About 48% of plans set it between $1,500 and $2,500. Only 3.4% of patients reach it, according to ADA News.
  • Waiting period: the time before some services are covered. For major work like crowns, it is usually 6 or 12 months.
  • Coinsurance: your share of the bill. Under a 100/80/50 plan, you usually pay half the cost of major work, like a crown.

How to use this section

These guides explain how coverage works. We do not recommend or rank insurers. Before you buy a policy, read its waiting periods, yearly maximum and coverage levels. Then compare them with the work you need. Our cost guides show national averages, such as $1,560 for a crown.

If you need work soon, a dental savings plan is one alternative. Plans start within 1 to 2 business days and have no yearly maximum. See the savings plans section or compare the best dental savings plans. No coverage at all? Start with dental care without insurance.

Dental savings plans are not insurance. They provide discounts at participating providers. You pay the provider directly at the time of service. Prices vary by provider and ZIP code. This page is for information only and is not dental or financial advice.
