Short answer: a fixed dental bridge to replace one missing tooth costs about $3,010 to $7,900 in the US, with a national average of $4,620. That is usually a three-unit bridge: two crowns plus one false tooth. Bridges on implants average about $5,195.

Dental savings plans are not insurance. A plan gives you discounts only at participating dentists. It does not pay the dentist for you, and you pay for all services at the discounted rate. Prices, discounts and dentists vary by plan and ZIP code.

Bridges are billed per unit. Each crown and each false tooth is one unit. A three-unit bridge replaces one tooth. A four-unit bridge replaces two teeth or spans a longer gap. Always ask for the price per unit.

Types of bridges

Traditional bridge

The teeth on each side of the gap are filed down and crowned. A false tooth hangs between them. It is cemented in place. If it fails, the whole bridge usually needs replacing.

Maryland bridge

The false tooth is bonded to the back of the neighboring teeth. Pearl describes it as less invasive than a traditional bridge, but less durable.

Implant-supported bridge

Implants hold the bridge instead of natural teeth, so no healthy teeth are filed down. Dentaly says a bridge of three or four teeth on two implants starts around $5,000. CareCredit’s cost study puts the average at $5,195. See our dental implants cost guide.

What raises or lowers the price

  • Number of units: each crown and false tooth adds cost.
  • Material: all-ceramic, porcelain fused to metal and gold are priced differently.
  • Lab fees: high-end labs charge more than chain labs.
  • Build-ups: anchor teeth that need rebuilding add a fee. A core build-up has a sample usual fee of $375.
  • Root canals: if an anchor tooth needs one, it is billed separately. See our root canal cost guide.
  • Extraction: removing the failing tooth first adds about $260 on average.
  • Sedation: anything beyond local numbing is usually extra.

Pearl says a quote usually includes numbing, shaping the anchor teeth, a scan or impression, a temporary bridge, lab work and the final fitting.

Does dental insurance cover a bridge?

Usually in part. Most plans follow a 100/80/50 pattern, and bridges are major work at 50%. Pearl says most PPO plans pay 50% after the deductible, up to the yearly maximum.

  • Yearly maximum: 32.8% of plans cap benefits at $1,000 to $1,500 a year, and 48.2% at $1,500 to $2,500.
  • Waiting period: major work often has a 6 or 12 month wait.
  • Missing teeth: some policies do not cover a tooth lost before you joined.

The anchor crowns on a bridge use their own codes, so ask the office for the plan fee on each unit. Compare plans in our best dental savings plans guide.

Worked example: a three-unit bridge

Say you need a three-unit bridge at the national average of $4,620.

  • No coverage: you pay $4,620.
  • Insurance at 50% with a $1,500 maximum: half is $2,310, but the plan stops at $1,500. You pay $3,120, plus any deductible.
  • Aetna Dental Access, rough estimate: if the two anchor crowns are priced like the plan’s single crown, you pay $852 + $852 + $735 = $2,439. Add $174.95 for the plan and fee: $2,613.95.

At the plan’s sample usual fees, the same three units would cost $4,136. The estimate is only a guide; get the real per-unit fees in writing.

Bridge vs implant vs partial denture

OptionTypical priceGood to know
Three-unit bridgeAverage $4,620Fixed; often lasts 10–15 years
Single implant, all-in$5,000–$7,500Fixed; implant often lasts 20+ years
Partial denture (cast metal)Average $1,920Removable; lowest upfront cost

A bridge costs less upfront and needs no surgery. It is often done in about two visits. But it means filing down healthy neighboring teeth. An implant leaves those teeth alone and often lasts longer. A partial is cheapest but comes out. See our dentures cost guide.

Ways to pay less

  • Ask for a written estimate with each unit and code, so you can compare offices.
  • Get a second quote, especially for bridges of four units or more.
  • Try a dental school. Supervised students treat patients at reduced fees.
  • Check community health centers, where fees are often based on income.
  • Ask for the cash price.
  • Spread the cost carefully. Ask about an in-office plan first. See our financing guide before using a medical credit card.

Questions to ask before you agree

  • How many units is my bridge, and what is the price per unit?
  • What material will you use, and what would another material cost?
  • Do the anchor teeth need build-ups or a root canal first?
  • Is the temporary bridge included?
  • What would an implant or a partial denture cost instead?
  • Do you take my savings plan or insurance, and what is my share?

A bridge uses crowns on the anchor teeth, so our dental crown cost guide helps you check those fees. To weigh coverage options, see savings plan vs insurance.

When to see a dentist

See a dentist if you have a gap from a lost tooth, or a bridge that feels loose, hurts or traps food. Also go for pain, swelling or bleeding gums near a bridge. Only a dentist can say if your neighboring teeth can hold one.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a bridge per tooth?

Bridges are priced per unit, not per missing tooth. In two sample areas, a false tooth had a usual fee of $1,009 to $1,200. Each anchor crown is billed on top.

Bridge or implant: which costs less?

A bridge usually costs a bit less upfront. An implant often lasts longer and does not touch the neighboring teeth. Get quotes for both.

How long does a bridge last?

Often 10 to 15 years with good care, according to Pearl.

Will insurance pay for a replacement bridge?

Bridges are major work, usually paid at 50% when covered. Each plan has its own rules for replacing older work, so check yours before you book.

Why is my quote higher than the average?

More units, premium materials, build-ups or a root canal on an anchor tooth all add cost. Ask for an itemized quote.
