Short answer: Wisdom tooth removal costs $400 to $1,055 per tooth in the US, with a national average of $615. At that average, all four come to about $2,460 before sedation. Teeth that have fully come in cost less. Teeth stuck in the bone cost more. A dental savings plan can cut the per-tooth fee by more than half at participating dentists.
Dental savings plans are not insurance. A plan gives you discounts only at participating dentists. It does not pay the dentist for you, and you pay for all services at the discounted rate. Prices, discounts and dentists vary by plan and ZIP code.
Wisdom teeth removal cost per tooth
Most offices quote wisdom teeth per tooth, as Pearl notes. The price depends on how far the tooth has come in. An “impacted” tooth is stuck under the gum or in the jawbone.
| Type of removal | Code | Typical price per tooth | Where the price comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wisdom tooth removal, all types | D7220–D7241 | $400–$1,055, average $615 | National, Pearl |
| Erupted tooth, simple extraction | D7140 | $225 | Orlando, Humana |
| Impacted, soft tissue | D7220 | $383 | Orlando, Humana |
| Impacted, partly in bone | D7230 | $460 | Orlando, Humana |
| Impacted, fully in bone | D7240 | $500 | Orlando, Humana |
| Impacted, soft tissue | D7220 | $567 | Houston sample usual fee |
| Impacted, partly in bone | D7230 | $644 | Houston sample usual fee |
Cost to remove all four wisdom teeth
UMass Memorial Health notes surgeons may remove all four at once. A simple estimate is four times the per-tooth fee, plus sedation if you choose it.
| Scenario | Estimated total for four teeth | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| National average | About $2,460 | 4 × $615 (Pearl), no sedation |
| All four fully erupted, no surgery | $720 | Delta Dental of Kansas |
| All four below the gumline, with up to one hour of general anesthesia | $3,120 | Delta Dental of Kansas |
| Orlando, all four impacted in soft tissue | $1,532 | 4 × $383 (Humana), no sedation |
| Orlando, all four fully in bone | $2,000 | 4 × $500 (Humana), no sedation |
The Delta Dental of Kansas figures are older, from 2021 data. We include them because they are the only verified source we found that bundles anesthesia into a four-tooth price.
Anesthesia and sedation: how they affect the bill
UMass Memorial Health describes three levels of numbing and sedation for wisdom teeth:
- Local anesthesia. Numbs only the area around the tooth. It is used in every case.
- Sedation. Keeps you relaxed but awake. Options include nitrous oxide, a pill or an IV.
- General anesthesia. Puts you to sleep. Surgeons may suggest it for a hard removal or if you prefer to be asleep.
Pearl says IV sedation or general anesthesia adds a significant cost on top of the removal. Delta Dental of Kansas says local anesthesia is included in the removal fee. Sedation is a separate charge that insurance may or may not cover. We could not find a verified national price for sedation, so ask for it as its own line on your estimate.
UMass Memorial Health says an adult must drive you home after surgery. Plan for at least a day of rest.
What raises or lowers the price
- Erupted or impacted. Fully erupted teeth cost less. Teeth deep in the bone cost the most.
- How many teeth. Most quotes are per tooth, so four cost roughly four times one.
- Type of anesthesia. Local is usually included. Pearl says IV sedation or general anesthesia adds significant cost.
- Who does it. An oral surgeon often charges more than a general dentist.
- Extras. A bone graft, if recommended, is billed separately, per Pearl.
- Where you live. A soft-tissue impaction is $383 in the Orlando sample and $567 in the Houston sample.
Wisdom teeth removal cost with insurance
Pearl says most PPO plans pay 50% to 80% of medically necessary removal after the deductible. Coverage depends on factors like impaction or infection. Four teeth can use up a big share of your yearly maximum.
- Yearly maximum. ADA News reports 32.8% of plans cap benefits at $1,000 to $1,500, and 48.2% at $1,500 to $2,500.
- Waiting periods. Humana says most insurers wait 6 or 12 months before covering major care such as oral surgery.
- Sedation. It may be covered differently than the extraction itself. Ask your plan before surgery.
- Premiums. The 2026 average is $49.60 a month, per Becker’s Dental Review.
Some plans have shorter waits. See dental insurance with no waiting period and our general dental insurance guide.
Wisdom teeth removal cost with a savings plan
A savings plan is a yearly membership with reduced fees at participating dentists. There is no yearly maximum, so four teeth are discounted the same as one. There is no waiting period once the plan is active.
| Plan (yearly fee) | Impacted, soft tissue (usual $567) | Impacted, partly in bone (usual $644) |
|---|---|---|
| Aetna Dental Access ($154.95 + $20) | $183 | $268 |
| Careington Care 500 ($184.95 + $20) | $128 | $164 |
| Humana Dental Savings, Sam’s Club ($49.92) | Members typically save 20% to 40% | |
If an oral surgeon will do the work, check that the surgeon participates before you join, and ask whether sedation is discounted too. Learn how dental savings plans work, or compare options in our list of the best dental savings plans.
Worked example: four impacted wisdom teeth
Say two teeth are impacted in soft tissue and two are partly in bone. Using the Houston sample: 2 × $567 + 2 × $644 = $2,422. Sedation is extra in every case below.
With insurance (an example plan, not a quote). Assume a $50 deductible, 80% coverage and a $1,500 yearly maximum. The plan would owe ($2,422 − $50) × 80% = $1,897.60. It stops at $1,500, so you pay $922. If your plan pays 50%, it pays $1,186 and you pay $1,236. Premiums add about $595 for the year.
With a savings plan. On Aetna Dental Access: 2 × $183 + 2 × $268 = $902. With the first year’s $174.95 fee, that is $1,076.95. On Careington Care 500: 2 × $128 + 2 × $164 = $584, or $788.95 with the fee.

Ways to pay less
- Get an itemized estimate. Each tooth should have its own code, from D7140 to D7241. Sedation should be its own line.
- Ask which teeth truly need to come out. Some wisdom teeth cause no problems, as UMass Memorial Health notes.
- Ask about your sedation options. A lighter option may cost less if it is right for you.
- Ask for the cash price. Some offices discount if you pay at the visit.
- Try a dental school. NIDCR says supervised students treat patients at reduced cost.
- Check a community health center. Fees are based on income. Find one at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov.
- Ask about payment options. Many offices offer payment plans. Medical credit cards and loans exist too, so read the interest terms.

When to see a dentist
See a dentist if you have pain, swelling or bleeding around the back of your mouth. Your dentist can check where your wisdom teeth sit and whether removal makes sense. After surgery, call your dentist for severe pain that medicine does not help, a fever or pus.
